Bridging the educational gap Andhra Pradesh has come forward to inaugurate Dravidian University with the help of State Government of Andhra Pradesh via legislature act No.17 of 1997. The support was extended by the governments of different states as in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka to augment the development of Dravidian languages and culture and give it a prominent position amid other cultures.
The university formed in 1997 started to function in two departments in the year 1998 and grew in to strong institution of 20 academic departments and 6 research centers.

Earlier the university functioned only in 5 departments up to 2004 has then obtained 12B recognition for grants with successful initiative of 5 more departments in addition to 6 more courses under self-financing schemes.
