Recent rains replenish sydney dams that hold back flood waters

Dowell said the emergency response effort by the Department of Emergency Services was focused on the Sydney Water Authority's emergency management facility.

"We've put about two hectares of emergency fencing around this building which provides additional protection," he said.

"While we don't know yet whether the floodwaters have reached this area, we have been working very closely with the authorities in NSW to try and protect people from the floodwaters that are about to arrive."

Dowell said while the area was still in flood stage, many of the barriers had been moved out of flood hazard areas.

"A number of the flood-affected areas in the CBD today are still under flood stage, while areas west of the CBD were in flood stage," he said.

"But the priority is to support communities that have been in contact with the city as we advise them what to do if their homes are affected."

Dowell said the city was well into the period during which people should start to return home and to stay within their area.

"It's not too early to begin back in normal activities, which is the time we should remember those around those affected and those who were there on Sunday," he said.

"But a lot of people in their daily routine have already left.

"A number of areas are in good condition because we've moved the people out of those areas but people who are not yet in flood stage could be affected."

Dowell said the city would continue to monitor the situation and could expect more severe storm conditions at some point.

"The storm is about to get stronger so if there is any chance of flooding, we've been working closely with the emergency response team to provide as much protection as we can," he said.

"We are doing what we can to put out the warning."

The city's emergency services are providing "extraordinary levels of assistance to those affected".

Dowell said the community was reminded that "flooding is very, very possible".

"We should remember that we are talking about a large amount of water, even though there was little rain," he said.

"The city says 'we are not talking to you. We have got our engineers'.

"Some people may be in the CBD, some of them will be in the outer suburbs... and we want to make sure that all people are aware of what they might face and what resources are available to them.

"As usual, that is the priority, which is to stay safe."

Flooding and storm damage around queensland has been reported. More areas are expected to come under the influence of water.

In Queensland, the north west has been battered by bushfires that have damaged several houses.

The state and territory government says the heat, particularly from the north, has led to the burning of more than 20,000 hectares of bushland and bushfires have engulfed hundreds of properties in NSW.

More than 12.2 million Australians rely on bush fire relief activities.

The MetService says many of these communities were damaged by bushfires in the past week.

In the north west, several people were killed by water damage. Queensland fire fighters battled a bushfire on the outskirts of Townsville overnight, which saw some 75 fires break out.

The MetService says bushfires in the north west, particularly in Victoria, Northern Territory, and Western Australia, have caused significant bushfire evacuation warnings for people living in the areas affected.

In Victoria, the state's Emergency Planning Agency says more than 400 fires have been controlled and no people were injured, with four homes and several buildings damaged or destroyed.

People in the area were urged to avoid bushfires as much as possible.

More than 100 bushfires were burning in all.
