Festival season goes awry to Nirmala School teachers, Buck stops at Education Directorate
    ASHEEM PODDAR
    PORT BLAIR, OCT 12:
The harried teachers and other staff members of Nirmala School here are still in a state of shock unable to understand as to what has hit them. The hapless staff members of the minority institution which has been rendering quality education to children from all walks of life, including the poor and the downtrodden, for the last 60 years have been denied salaries and reimbursement of medical bills etc since July this year. The school runs its affairs with the help of 95 % grant-in-aid it receives from the Education Department of A&N Administration. The things have been quite hunk-dory until February this year. The troubles began thereafter. Files pertaining to grant-in-aid were kept pending in the Directorate of Education for some unknown reasons.

Distressed teachers and other staff have not received their salaries since July this year. The school management has been running from pillar to post to get the aid expedited. So much so, even the Lt. Governor was approached. The file was finally cleared by the LG about a couple of days ago. And then began the hide and seek game at the Directorate of Education. The file which should have been cleared immediately without further delay was said to be resting at the Director’s table. Nobody would tell about the movement of the file. The school management is in jitters as one of the teachers will be retiring this month end and there is no money to settle the retirement claim. Even the medical reimbursement bills of a lady teachers who is suffering from cancer have not been settled.

For more than a week, the teachers and other staff have been working wearing black badges as a mark of protest.
As is his wont, Shubhankar Ghosh, Director of Education, did not pick numerous calls made to him by The Phoenix Post to solicit his comment on the sordid affair. His deputy Sudhir Kumar, however, picked the call and informed that the order regarding the grant-in-aid for Nirmala School was released on Thursday. Now the Pay & Accounts office will take its own time.

Call it a deliberate attempt or an inadvertent delay, festival holidays having begun already, the Nirmala teachers may have to wait till after the festivals to receive their salaries. And they will be getting salaries only for the months of July and August. They will have to struggle again for Sept salary.

Please go through this matter and help these teachers as soon as possible.
