Dr. Farhat Hashmi’s life and work:
In the 1990s, a Muslim woman decided to do something very important: she would raise Allah’s flag as high as she could. Dr. Farhat Hashmi has a Master of Arts degree in Arabic from Punjab University and a Doctor of Philosophy degree in Islamic Studies from the University of Glasgow. But this sister went to school and learned more on her own because she was self-motivated. She decided to talk about it…with everyone in the whole world. At the college in her home town, Dr. Hashmi taught groups of young women about Arabic and Islamic Studies. She would also hold halaqahs, which are like talks or study groups, and call women from many different backgrounds.
She realized that Allah SWT had given her the job of putting out the light and replacing it with the darkness that was hurting our Ummah as her halaqas became more famous and Pakistani women from a wide range of social and economic groups began to attend. After that, Dr. Hashmi set up Al-Huda International at two different places in Pakistan. The new group calls itself a “Islamic institution that focuses on social welfare, education, training, and research.” Not long after that, Muslimas from the United States, England, Canada, and the Middle East who were eager to learn started coming to her classes because of the way she taught. More than 10,000 students have successfully finished the Al-Huda programs. Students can take classes in either English or Urdu, based on which language is easiest for them. However, their main goal is to learn Arabic, which is thought to be the tongue of God.
