The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education is a council governed and administered independently by the state of West Bengal. It is an independent examining authority of the state for the standard 12 or the higher secondary level or pre-university level examination.
The examination is also known as the Uchyaa Madhyamik or Higher Secondary examination and is conducted annually in the state and also affiliates of other boards present in the country.
The headquarters of the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education is situated at the Salt Lake City in Kolkata. Moreover, the other three main offices are located at Bidhannagar, Karunamoyee and Kolkata along with other 4 regional offices.
Before the establishment of the board, the Higher Secondary Examination was conducted annually under the administration of the University of Calcutta. Soon after 1960s, when the government formed the council under the West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education, Act 1975, it got a separate board and management.
