The central government established CCI on October 14, 2003. It became functional in May 2009. The commission consists of six members and a Chairman. It promotes and sustains competition, and protects the interests of consumers to ensure freedom in the market. The competition commission gives opinion on numerous issues related to competition and imparts training on competition and related issues. Its objectives are to: work in the interests of consumer welfare, nurture effective relations with sectoral regulator and carry out competition advocacy. The CCI spreads information to establish free and fair competition culture in the Indian economy.
