State Bank of India has a great history to its name. The bank has great history to its name. During British India, it was known as Imperial Bank of India. It too had its origin from two banks of the sub Indian continent. Bank of Calcutta which was found in 1806 and also the oldest bank in Indian Subcontinent merged with Bank of Bombay to create Imperial Bank of India. It was after Independence in 1955, when Government of India nationalized the Imperial Bank of India. Reserve Bank of India took 60% stake, and renamed it the State Bank of India. In 2008, the government took over the stake held by the Reserve Bank of India.
