It is a public university that has its base in the city of Vijaywada, Andhra Pradesh. The university is baptized after the then chief minister of state N.T. Rama Rao. It was recognized as the university of Health Science and was inaugurated on 9th April and was renamed in the years 1988 2nd February. The university has graduate, post graduate, degree and super specialty courses in modern medicine. It also provides graduate and post graduate degree in Dental surgery, Nursing, Ayurveda, and Unani. Besides graduate degree in Naturopathy, Physiotherapy and Medical Laboratory Technology and a Post graduate course in M.SC and Applied Nutrition is offered. There are many other courses that are provided to students who wish to establish a career in medical industry.
Presently there are numerous colleges who are affiliated to the university. In fact the number has risen from 27 to 184. The university offers a degree that is recognized by the statutory bodies including the Medical Council of India, the Central Council of Indian Medicine, the Central Council of Homeopathy, the Indian Nursing Council, and the Dental Council of India.
