The Central Agricultural University was established by an act of Parliament, the Central Agricultural University Act, 1992 (No.40 of 1992). It came into effect on 26th January, 1993 with the issue of notification by the Department of Agricultural Research and Education (DARE), Govt. of India. However, it started operations and became functional on 13th September, 1993 soon after the joining of first Vice-Chancellor. The six North-Eastern Hill States, Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim and Tripura, with headquarters at Imphal in Manipur have the jurisdiction of the university.
Besides, the main focus of this most renowned university is to become a centre of excellence in teaching, research and additional education in the field of agriculture and related sectors. It also has an objective to develop sustainable farming systems and to bring some improvement in productivity and profitability in agriculture and related sectors. The university also aims to train farmers so that they can adapt and understand the advanced agricultural technologies in North-East India.
