Air India is the national flag carrier of India. It is the fourth-largest domestic airline, behind Jet Airways, IndiGo andSpiceJet, in terms of market share. There are three subsidiaries of Air India i.e., Air India Cargo, Air India Express and Air India Regional.
Moreover, Air India has signed various codesharing agreements with many international airlines. These airlines are Aeroflot, Alitalia, Air Mauritius, Asiana Airlines, Lufthansa, Austrian Airlines, Ethiopian Airlines, Kuwait Airways, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, SriLankan Airlines, Swiss International Airlines and Turkish Airlines.
The national public carrier operates two hubs in India i.e., Indira Gandhi International Airport, New Delhi and Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport, Mumbai. It has also operated an international hub at Germany’s Frankfurt International Airport but it was to be terminated with high costs. The airline is now operating Dubai International Airport.
Its merger with Indian Airlines in 2011 resulted multiple problems during 2007-2011.
Star Alliance, the world’s largest global airline alliance, headquartered in Frankfurt am Main, Germany, suspended nomination of Air India membership to join its list in August 2011 as airline fall short to meet the minimum standards.
Conspicuously, the government of India granted bailout package to Air India in April 2012.
